GoPro HERO10 Black

I didn’t plan on upgrading my camera gear any time soon, but when the GoPro HERO10 Black came along it became hard to ignore. It’s a solid chunk of kit, and after using it at the coast, around pools and on walks, I’ve come to appreciate what it does well and where it feels like a small compromise.

The HERO10 Black is compact and quite sturdy. That matters when you’re moving around a van, slipping it into a pocket or hanging it on a mount. It feels built to handle knocks and wet days without making you worry too much.

One of its main strengths is how it handles footage. The image stabilisation, known as HyperSmooth 4.0, does a good job of smoothing out the bumps you naturally get when you’re walking, biking or tracking around uneven ground. With that on, video feels steadier and clearer than on older action cameras I’ve used.

Water performance is straightforward. The HERO10 is waterproof to ten metres without any extra case, which meant I could take it swimming or near the sea without much hesitation. That kind of simplicity is handy when you’re travelling light.

For everyday use, the ability to capture both photos and video in good quality makes it genuinely useful. I took it to a few different places and found the colours and detail held up well for what I was doing. It’s not fussy to set up, and I appreciated that after long days on the road.

Pairing the camera with GoPro’s Quik app meant I could move footage onto a phone or tablet without cables, which is decent when you’re trying to keep kit to a minimum. The app also has simple tools for trimming and tweaking clips before you share them or save them for later.

Battery life is reasonable for an action camera like this. The HERO10 uses a 1720 mAh lithium-ion battery, which let me record for stretches of time without hunting for a charger. Fast USB-C charging helped get it back up to readiness when I needed it.

Not everything was perfect. The touchscreen, while bright and clear, sometimes felt a little reluctant to respond right away. It didn’t stop me using the camera, but it’s something you notice when you’re trying to change settings quickly.

All told, the GoPro HERO10 Black is a capable action camera. It’s versatile and hardy, and for me it has become a reliable way to document time on the road. It doesn’t feel overly complicated, and it captures footage that makes it easy to look back on those everyday travel moments.
