Cornwall

Cornwall is one of the most popular van travel destinations in England and, despite the summer crowds, still one of the best. The combination of dramatic coastline, surf beaches, fishing villages, wild moorland and a strong sense of separate cultural identity makes it uniquely rewarding. The key to getting the most out of Cornwall by van is timing and a willingness to venture beyond the well-known spots.

The Penwith peninsula – the far west of Cornwall – has a concentration of ancient sites, rugged coastal paths and small fishing ports that rewards a slow van circuit. The north coast, facing the Atlantic, offers surf beaches from Bude south to Newquay and beyond. The south coast – the Roseland Peninsula, Falmouth and the Helford River – is more sheltered, wooded and quieter. Each has a distinct character.

Overnight van parking in Cornwall becomes significantly more restricted through the summer months. Many coastal car parks introduce barriers or overnight bans in July and August. Spring and autumn – particularly May and October – offer the best combination of weather, quieter roads, more open overnight options and a Cornwall that feels less like a theme park and more like the wild and particular place it actually is.

The Cornwall posts on this site cover specific stops and routes from real van trips – with honest notes on parking, access and what makes each location worth the effort at different times of year.

The ruins aren’t the main draw here, it’s the cliffs, the drop to the sea, and a beach cave that’s not always accessible.
