National Park

The UK has fifteen national parks – from the Lake District and Peak District in England to Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons in Wales, and the Cairngorms and Loch Lomond and The Trossachs in Scotland. Together they cover some of the finest protected landscapes in Europe and are among the most rewarding van travel destinations in the British Isles.

Each national park has its own character and practical profile for van travel. Some – like the Peak District and the Lake District – are heavily visited and require more careful planning around overnight stops and popular viewpoints. Others – like the Northumberland National Park or the Cairngorms – are far less crowded and offer more space and freedom. Understanding which is which helps you set realistic expectations for any given park.

Most UK national parks have a range of van-friendly overnight stop options – from established campsite networks and certificated locations to more informal layby and car park options on quieter roads. The practical advice on what is available and what works best varies by park and season, and all of it is based on real van trip experience.

The national park posts on this site cover specific visits to UK national parks – what to see, where to stay and how to get the most out of a van trip in protected landscapes.
