Layby on the A59, BD23 6AB
A straightforward roadside layby just outside Skipton that works as a reliable overnight fallback, with manageable noise and a useful café in the morning.
Not all of vanlife is mountains and moorland. Plenty of the best van stops are in and around UK cities – a car park a short walk from the city centre, a residential street near a tram stop, a motorhome park on the urban fringe. Urban stopovers let you explore some of the UK’s most interesting cities without the cost of hotels or the compromise of staying miles out of town.
City overnight stops vary enormously. Some towns have dedicated motorhome aires, others have multi-storey car parks that permit overnight stays, and some residential areas are genuinely van-friendly for a night or two if you’re respectful and low-impact. Getting to know which kind of stop each city offers is part of the research.
Urban vanlife has its own rhythms – it’s rarely as quiet as a country layby, but it opens up cities in a way that other forms of travel can’t quite match. You can park up near a music venue, spend an evening in an independent restaurant district, and drive away the next morning. It takes a bit more planning than rural van travel, but it’s often worth it.
The urban stopover posts on this site cover real overnight parking experiences in UK towns and cities – what worked, what to watch out for and how to make the most of city life from the van.

The same car park can feel calm and comfortable in October, then busy and exposed in summer. This review explains why timing changes the whole experience and what makes it worth using anyway.
I’ve stayed at Central Car Park more times than I can count, in every season and in all sorts of moods. Sometimes it’s been a straightforward overnight stop. Other times it’s felt a bit of a squeeze. It’s one of those places that’s useful, familiar, and slightly flawed all at once. The first thing you … Read more
The Kelpies sit within The Kelpies at The Helix, and their scale is something that is hard to fully appreciate until you arrive. Long before you reach the main parking area, their steel forms begin to appear above the trees and open ground. Even if you have seen them in photographs, standing beneath them gives … Read more
We pulled in expecting a simple overnight on the A47, but the steady flow of cars made it clear this spot is used for more than just resting.
