Wildlife Spot

Van travel and wildlife watching go well together. Moving slowly, sleeping in quiet spots, and spending time in places that day trippers pass through quickly means vanlifers regularly encounter wildlife that others miss – red deer on the glen road at dawn, otters working a river bank, marsh harriers quartering above the reeds.

The UK has more accessible wildlife than many countries give it credit for. Red kites soar above the Brecon Beacons and the Chilterns; puffins pack cliff ledges in Orkney, Shetland, and Pembrokeshire; seals haul out on Scottish beaches; dolphins work the bow waves of ferries. Knowing when and where to look makes a significant difference, and van travel allows you to be in the right place at the right time with a flexibility that fixed accommodation doesn’t allow.

The best wildlife spots tend to be places where habitat is intact – estuaries, ancient woodland, upland moorland, undisturbed coastline. The RSPB, the Wildlife Trusts, and nature reserves managed by Natural England and NatureScot protect many of these, but some of the best sightings happen well away from designated sites.
