Village

The UK’s villages are among its most characteristic and charming places – compact settlements with centuries of history written into their buildings, layout and surroundings. Exploring them by van allows a kind of slow-travel engagement that rushing between highlights on a conventional holiday rarely permits. You can arrive in the late afternoon, walk the village streets in the evening quiet, and leave in the morning after seeing it at its best.

What makes a village worth stopping for varies. Some have outstanding architecture – estate villages built in a consistent style, or simply a collection of buildings that have developed organically over centuries in response to local materials and conditions. Others have a particularly beautiful setting – in a valley, beside a river or backed by hills. Many combine both.

Van parking in villages ranges from free and simple to difficult or non-existent. Smaller villages often have enough roadside space to park comfortably without causing problems; more popular or narrow-laned villages can be more challenging. The posts on this site give honest notes on parking practicalities alongside the wider appeal of each village.

Whether you are building a route around the UK’s most beautiful villages or simply looking for somewhere interesting to stop mid-drive, the village posts here give you ideas and practical information from real van trips.
