Waterfall

Waterfalls make for some of the best spontaneous stops in UK van travel. Whether it’s a roadside spill in the Lake District, a hidden gorge in the Brecon Beacons, or a forest cascade in Highland Perthshire, the UK has more waterfalls per square mile than most countries in Europe – and many of the best are accessible without a long walk.

Finding waterfalls in a van requires a bit of planning – parking near them is often limited, and narrow approaches mean that some are better walked into rather than driven. But the reward of arriving at a good waterfall, particularly after rain when the flow is heavy, is hard to match. Sound and spray, cold air and deep green – these are the sensory rewards of van travel that don’t photograph easily but stay with you.

Wales, Scotland, and the Lake District have the highest concentration of accessible waterfalls, but the North York Moors, Dartmoor, and the Peak District all have examples worth seeking out. The best tend to be on routes that van travellers are already on, which means the detour is often short.

Posts in this tag cover specific waterfalls visited during UK van trips – practical details, what the parking situation is like, and honest impressions of the stop.
