If you are spending a weekend on the East Yorkshire coast, a walk around Spurn Point is one of the most memorable ways to experience the area. The landscape feels exposed, wild and slightly haunting, with the Humber Estuary on one side and the sea never feeling far away.
After a few windswept hours out on foot, the Crown & Anchor in Kilnsea makes a very natural place to stop. It is a traditional seaside pub on Easington Road, close to the edge of the Humber Estuary, and it worked well for us as a relaxed lunch stop after walking.
First Impressions
We arrived after a long walk, still carrying that slightly weathered feeling you get after time on the coast. It was bright enough to sit outside, so we chose a spot in the beer garden and made the most of the fresh air.
The pub has a laid-back, unpretentious feel. It was pleasantly busy when we visited, but not in a way that felt rushed or crowded. There was a relaxed mix of locals and visitors, and the atmosphere felt welcoming from the moment we arrived.
The bar staff were friendly and helpful without overdoing it. They were happy to answer questions about the menu, and the service added to the easy, comfortable feel of the place.
Eating Outside Beside the Humber
The beer garden is one of the strongest reasons to stop here, especially on a clear day. From the outdoor seating area, you can look out across the wide waters of the Humber, with open sky and the sound of the estuary close by.
The seating area was clean and well kept, with picnic-style benches and enough space to settle in without feeling squeezed in. It sits fairly close to the road, but the road was not busy during our visit, so it did not spoil the experience. If anything, the occasional passing car only reminded us how quiet this corner of the coast can feel.
For anyone travelling by car, van or campervan, it is the sort of pub that works well as part of a wider day out rather than a rushed stop. The location is a little off the main flow of traffic, so it is worth planning it into your route if you are already heading towards Spurn Point or Kilnsea.
Food and Value
The menu had a good balance of familiar pub classics and a few more modern touches. Prices felt very reasonable on our visit, with drinks and two generously portioned meals coming in at around £25.

My travel companion chose the tuna mayonnaise ciabatta with chips. It was a simple order, but it was done properly. The ciabatta was fresh, crusty on the outside and soft inside, with plenty of creamy tuna mayonnaise filling.
The chips were also better than an afterthought. They were golden and crisp on the outside, with a fluffy centre, and had that very familiar habit of disappearing even after you have said you are full.
I went for the Yorkshire pudding wrap, which was the more indulgent choice. It came filled with tender beef, peas, carrots, crispy roast potatoes and rich gravy. It is essentially a Sunday roast wrapped inside a Yorkshire pudding, and it made a lot of sense after a coastal walk.
The Yorkshire pudding itself was light and fluffy rather than heavy or rubbery, and it held together better than expected given how much was inside. The beef was soft and well cooked, the carrots and peas were tender without being overdone, and the roast potatoes were the best part of the plate. They were crisp on the outside, soft in the middle and good enough to ration slowly.
Drinks
We had a pint of local ale and a crisp cider with the meal, both of which were well poured and refreshing after time out in the sun. There was a good selection behind the bar, with local brews alongside more familiar options.
The drinks prices also felt fair, which helped the whole stop feel like good value rather than a scenic pub relying only on its location.
What Stood Out
The Crown & Anchor looks and feels like a relaxed coastal pub, but the food suggested a kitchen that pays attention. Everything had a home-cooked feel, but there was still care in the way the meals were put together.
The portions were generous without feeling excessive, and the quality was stronger than you might expect from a simple post-walk pub lunch. It was the combination of warm service, satisfying food and the view over the Humber that made the visit stand out.
Who It Suits
The Crown & Anchor is a good option if you want a meal or drink after visiting Spurn Point, especially if you prefer somewhere relaxed rather than polished. It suits walkers, couples, families, road-trippers and anyone exploring this part of the East Yorkshire coast by car, van or campervan.
It is not trying to be flashy, and that is part of the appeal. It lets the setting, service and food do the work.
Final Thoughts
We would return next time we are in the area. Whether you are after a lunch stop after a walk, a scenic place for a pint, or a relaxed meal that does not feel overpriced, the Crown & Anchor is a strong choice near Spurn Point.
