The Garden Room

The Garden Room Café sits in the village of Braithwell, just east of Rotherham. It’s an easy one to reach if you’re travelling through the area, with straightforward access from junction 1 of the M18 and only a short drive up from the south side of Doncaster.

The café describes its food as fresh, simple and homemade. After a visit, it’s fair to say that holds up, with a bit more care and quality than you might expect from a quick roadside stop.

We arrived at lunchtime on a Tuesday and the place was already full, with people being turned away at the door. It’s usually a good sign, and in this case it set the tone. Inside, the space feels modern and well looked after, with enough detail to give it character without feeling busy. Staff were attentive from the start and made a point of letting us know what wasn’t available that day, which in this case was just the steak.

The menu offers a decent spread, covering both meat and vegetarian options without feeling overdone. I went for the homemade fish fingers on chunky bread with chips. Food took around twenty minutes to arrive, which felt about right. Long enough to settle in, not so long that you start watching the kitchen.

Presentation was simple but well thought out. The fish came on a metal tray, lined with newspaper and greaseproof paper. The fish fingers were clearly made in-house, with soft white cod and a crisp breadcrumb coating that held together properly. The chips were hand-cut and cooked the way you hope for, not overdone, not limp. A side of homemade tartar sauce brought everything together, with a balance of sharpness and creaminess that worked well with the fish.

Others on the table shared a chocolate meringue cake and said it was rich but worth it. Portions across the board are on the generous side, so dessert might depend on how far you get with your main.

Drinks came through without delay. The Americano with cream stood out, with a noticeable step up in quality from standard café coffee.

There’s also a courtyard area outside which looks like it would come into its own in warmer months. Braithwell itself is a quiet, well-kept village, the kind of place that suits a slower stop rather than a quick in-and-out.

The Garden Room Café feels like somewhere you’d return to if you’re passing through regularly. Not complicated, just well run and consistent.
