The Fox House

The Fox House at Longshaw, just outside Sheffield, sits in one of those spots that makes you slow down a bit. Surrounded by open countryside on the edge of the Peak District, it’s the kind of place you’d naturally stop after a walk or a drive through the moors. The building itself dates back to 1773, and inside it leans into that history with a rustic, traditional feel.

It’s part of the Vintage Inns chain, which does raise expectations slightly around consistency and service. We visited on Mother’s Day, which is about as busy as it gets, so it felt like a fair test of how well it runs under pressure.

Booking and Arrival

Booking ahead was essential for the day, with deposits required to secure a table. The pub was full, but there were plenty of staff working, which made a noticeable difference. Service didn’t feel rushed or stretched, and throughout the meal the team stayed attentive without hovering.

Food and Experience

We started with calamari served with a chilli and chipotle dip. It arrived cold initially and had to be sent back, but it was handled quickly and without fuss. When it returned, the calamari itself was well cooked. Light batter, not chewy, exactly what you’d hope for. The dip, though, lacked any real heat or depth, which made it fairly forgettable.

For the main, we went with fish and chips. It felt like the safe option, but it turned out to be the right one. The batter was light and crisp, and the fish itself was fresh and well cooked. Chips were decent rather than standout, but they did the job. Portion sizes were generous enough that by the end of the course, finishing dessert felt like it might be a stretch.

Dessert was a raspberry milkshake cheesecake with clotted cream, and it was probably the highlight of the meal. Nicely baked, not overly heavy, and balanced with a sweet sauce that actually carried some flavour. It was one of those desserts you’re glad you made room for.

Across the table, the rest of the group had a mix of dishes including a vegetarian goat’s cheese tart, steak and chips, and lamb two ways. Feedback across all of them was positive, with no issues raised.

Atmosphere and Value

Given how busy it was, the atmosphere stayed relaxed and easygoing. It didn’t feel overcrowded or chaotic, which can often be the case on days like this. That’s likely down to the staffing levels and how things were managed behind the scenes.

The Mother’s Day set menu came in at £20.50 for three courses, which felt like good value for the setting, portion sizes, and overall experience. Even with the small hiccup at the start, the meal as a whole felt well put together.

Location and Practical Details

Overall, it’s a reliable option in a strong location. Not flawless, but on a busy day it delivered where it mattered, and it’s somewhere we’d consider returning to after a day out in the area.
