The Bradfield Plough is a traditional country pub that makes a useful stopping point after time spent walking or cycling in the surrounding countryside. I called in after a long walk, looking for a filling meal rather than anything elaborate, and the visit delivered exactly that.
A practical stop after a walk
Our visit was unplanned and I had not booked a table. The staff gave us a warm welcome, checked what was available and were able to seat us. That was our experience on the day rather than a guarantee of a table, but the helpful reception made a good first impression.

Inside The Bradfield Plough
The interior has the character you would expect from a traditional country pub, with a warm, rustic feel rather than a polished restaurant atmosphere. During colder weather, the open fire adds to the comfort of the room.
In sunnier conditions, there is ample outdoor seating. Families may also appreciate the children’s play area, which gives younger visitors somewhere to spend some energy while the adults settle in.
Steak and ale pie with generous portions
The menu offered plenty of choice, but I eventually ordered the steak and ale pie with chips and mushy peas, plus a side of onion rings.
The first thing to know is that the portions were generous. My side order turned out to be more than I needed, so sharing extra sides would be a sensible option unless everyone arrives particularly hungry.
The pie was the strongest part of the meal. It contained substantial pieces of meat in a rich, flavoursome gravy, finished with a flaky pastry top. The chips were good on their own and even better with the pie gravy, making this one of the better pie-and-chips meals I had eaten in some time.
The onion rings were also substantial, with thick pieces of onion in crisp, golden batter. They worked well as a shared side and matched the rest of the meal in both size and quality.
Would I recommend The Bradfield Plough?
Yes. Based on this visit, The Bradfield Plough offered welcoming service, a comfortable country-pub setting and a satisfying meal at a reasonable price. It is an easy place to consider after a walk or cycle ride around Low Bradfield, and the outdoor seating and play area broaden its usefulness for families and other visitors.
The main practical lesson from my meal is not to underestimate the portions. Arrive hungry, and think carefully before ordering several sides.
