Sheffield has no shortage of places to eat, especially if you are after something quick and good value. Plenty of cafes and chains offer all you can eat breakfasts or budget-friendly plates. After trying a fair few around the city, the Wetherspoons breakfast is still one that stands out for what you pay.
We visited the Ecclesall Road branch, known as The Sheaf Island, on a Saturday morning. It was busy from the start, with a real mix of customers from students to older regulars. Finding a table at that time of day is not always straightforward, but we managed to get seated after a short wait. The table could have done with a quick wipe, which is fairly typical when it is this busy.
The menu is clear and easy to follow, and you order at the bar. For £5.29, the large breakfast feels like an easy decision. That price also includes refillable hot drinks. I went for tea and used the self-service station to make a Tetley’s.
The food arrived quickly, quicker than expected for how busy it was. It did give the impression that some items are pre-cooked and plated up as needed, but for this kind of place and price point, that is not really an issue. The speed is part of the appeal, especially if you just want something filling without waiting around.
The breakfast itself is generous. You get two sausages, two rashers of bacon, three hash browns, beans, tomato, mushrooms, toast with butter, and two fried eggs. There is also the option to add extras like black pudding, which was worth including.
Once you are finished, you can top up your drink and take your time, which adds to the overall value if you are not in a rush.
If you are looking for a straightforward, affordable breakfast in Sheffield, it is hard to argue with what is on offer here. It is not about presentation or atmosphere, but it does exactly what you need it to.
