I used Broken Road as a quick, no-frills overnight stop just outside Castleton on a spring weekend. I wanted somewhere free where I could park up and walk into the village without needing to move the van again, and for that it worked well.
It’s easy to find and straightforward to pull into, though you are parked on the road rather than tucked away. From the van, it’s around a 10 to 15 minute walk into the village. Parts of the walk follow the roadside rather than a proper footpath, which is worth keeping in mind, especially in poor weather or if you’re heading in after dark.
Arrival and Parking Space
When I arrived, there was already a line of vans parked up. There’s a decent amount of space overall, but it fills quickly, particularly at weekends and during good weather. It felt more like an informal meet-up spot than a quiet overnight stop, which may suit some travellers more than others.
Even so, the setting itself is a strong point. You’ve got open views across the surrounding hills, and it puts you right on the edge of some of the best walking routes in the area.
Facilities and Off-Grid Suitability
There are no facilities here at all. No toilets, no bins, and no water, so you need to arrive fully self-contained and take everything away with you. It works best as a simple off-grid stop for vans and smaller motorhomes that are already set up for an overnight stay.
Noise and Overnight Experience
It was quieter than I expected once it got later. Traffic drops off overnight, and I slept without any issues. By morning, the feel of the place changes quite a bit. Walkers start arriving early, along with dog walkers and day visitors, so there’s much more movement and cars coming and going.
The road is the main drawback. Some drivers pass through fairly quickly, and if you end up parked right on the edge, it can feel a little exposed from both a noise and safety point of view.
Walking Access from the Van
One of the biggest advantages of stopping here is that you can head straight out on foot without driving anywhere. From the van, it’s easy to walk towards Mam Tor, Winnats Pass, or Cave Dale, which makes it a very practical base if you’re in the area mainly for walking.
Castleton is also close enough to walk into for food or a pint, and there are a few solid pub options and takeaway spots in the village. If you want something different from walking, Blue John Cavern and Speedwell Cavern are also only a short distance away.
Ground Conditions and Vehicle Suitability
Most of the ground is fairly level, but I still used levelling blocks in places. There’s no shelter at all, so you’re fully exposed to both sun and weather, which can make a difference depending on the season.
It suits vans and smaller motorhomes best. Larger setups would likely find it tight if the space is already busy, especially at peak times.
Is Broken Road Worth Using?
For me, the main positives are the location and ease. You can park up, step out, and be straight onto some of the best walking routes around Castleton, with the village still within walking distance. The trade-off is zero facilities, a busier roadside setting, and the chance of sharing the space with quite a few other vans.
If you’re planning to stay, it’s worth arriving earlier in the day to get a better spot. I’d avoid parking right on the roadside edge if possible. A bike would also make the trip into Castleton easier if you don’t fancy walking along the road.
Overall, it works well as a simple overnight base if you’re self-contained and don’t mind a shared, roadside stop. I’d use it again, though probably outside peak times. It’s best suited to vanlifers who want easy access to Castleton and the surrounding walks rather than somewhere quiet or secluded.
