A47 Norwich Road

We pulled off the A47 into a layby near Acle in Norfolk one evening, around nine miles from Great Yarmouth. It’s a simple roadside stop on a long east to west route, and at first glance it feels much like any other rural layby.

The parking area sits slightly back from the carriageway, with a line of trees and low scrub giving some separation from the road. During the day you’re aware of passing traffic, but as the light fades and things quieten down, it becomes more settled. The ground is level, there’s enough space to turn and park without hassle, and the surrounding fields give a sense of openness rather than being boxed in.

As evening set in, it became clear this isn’t just a stop for drivers taking a break. There was a steady pattern of cars arriving, waiting briefly, then either moving on or shifting position. It didn’t feel random, and after a while we had the sense that something more was going on than people simply pulling in to rest.

A quick bit of searching confirmed it. The layby is known for gay cruising and dogging, and is used as a meeting spot, particularly by men. That explained the rhythm of arrivals and short stays, and why the activity followed a fairly consistent pattern rather than coming and going at random.

In practice, it means a regular flow of vehicles and people coming and going, particularly in the earlier part of the night. No one approached us directly, and there was no confrontation or pressure, but the activity is visible enough that you’re aware you’re sharing the space rather than just passing through it.

Beyond the layby itself, the location is practical rather than scenic. You’re well placed for exploring the Norfolk Broads, with its flat landscapes, rivers, and wide skies just a short drive away. It’s the kind of area that makes more sense in daylight, whether you’re walking, cycling, or heading out along quieter roads.

Great Yarmouth is also within easy reach if you need supplies or want time by the coast. It’s a typical seaside town, busy in places, quieter in others, and easy enough to dip in and out of without committing to staying there.

This isn’t a stop you’d choose for peace or atmosphere, and it doesn’t feel like a destination despite the surrounding countryside. As a functional overnight, it does the job if you know what to expect and are comfortable with the setting. For us, it was a reminder that roadside spots aren’t always neutral, and that how a place is used matters just as much as how it looks when you arrive.
