RAC Breakdown Cover
A warning light, an unfamiliar noise, and 100 miles from home. This is how a real RAC call-out played out on a coastal trip.
Service stations and motorway services are an unsung hero of van travel. Whether you’re midway through a long motorway haul or looking for a safe place to rest for a few hours, services offer predictable facilities and easy access from the road.
Most UK motorway services have 24-hour toilets, somewhere to pick up food or coffee, and parking that’s generally large enough to fit a van without too much trouble. Lorry parks at larger services often provide a quieter corner for overnight resting, though it’s always worth checking the site’s own rules around overnight stays.
For vanlifers, services are rarely the destination but they’re often a key part of the journey. A quick comfort stop between spots, a place to charge a phone or fill a flask, or somewhere to wait out bad weather – services earn their place in any UK van trip.
Posts in this tag cover first-hand experiences at UK service stations, including what to expect in terms of parking, facilities, and whether they made a reasonable overnight or mid-journey stop.
