Sometimes a place you usually only drive over works better on foot. This stop mixes bridge views, foreshore walking and a practical pause near Hull.
The East Riding of Yorkshire is often overshadowed by its more famous neighbours, but it offers a quietly distinctive van travel experience that rewards those who take the time to explore it. The Yorkshire Wolds – chalk uplands of sweeping valleys and quiet lanes – form the backbone of the region, while the coast runs from the sandy beaches of Bridlington and Filey south to the remarkable eroding cliffs of Holderness.
Beverley is the East Riding’s standout market town – one of the finest in England, with its extraordinary Minster, medieval streetscape and excellent food and drink scene. Further east, the coastal towns of Bridlington and Hornsea have their own character, and the quiet villages of the Wolds interior are some of the least-visited in Yorkshire.
For van travellers, the East Riding offers a relaxed pace and generally manageable overnight parking. It’s away from the congestion of the national park areas and rewards a slower, more exploratory approach. The Wolds especially benefit from van travel – many of the best landscapes are only accessible via small lanes.
The East Riding posts on this site cover specific stops and experiences from real van trips, giving you first-hand information about what to expect and where to go.
