If you’re anything like me, you’ll know the value of a straightforward, reliable place to park. Not every stop needs to be scenic. Sometimes you just need somewhere central, convenient and calm enough to rest after a day of exploring.
That was exactly what we found at Frankwell Main Car Park in Shrewsbury. It is not a campsite, and it does not pretend to be one, but as a practical town-centre base it worked better than I expected.
First Impressions
Frankwell Main Car Park is, quite simply, a car park. There are no pitches, no views, no electric hook-up and no camping facilities. What it does have is a very useful location.
From the car park, it is only a short walk across the footbridge into Shrewsbury town centre. Within a few minutes you are among the medieval streets, shops, pubs, places to eat and riverside walks that make the town such an easy place to spend time.
We arrived in the late afternoon after a scenic drive through Shropshire and managed to find a few larger bays free. There are no designated campervan spaces, but some of the edge spaces felt more workable for a longer van. As always with town-centre parking, it is worth taking your time when you arrive rather than squeezing into the first space you see.
Parking and Costs
Frankwell Main Car Park operates as a pay-and-display car park. At the time of our visit, parking cost £0.80 an hour between 8 am and 6 pm, with a maximum daily charge of £6.40.
The useful part for visitors staying into the evening is that parking is free overnight from 6 pm to 8 am. It is also free all day on Sundays and bank holidays.
For a general visit to Shrewsbury, that makes it a handy option if you want to park once and explore on foot. For van and campervan travellers, it can also work well as a simple overnight stop if you are self-contained and leaving early the next morning.
If you are in a larger vehicle and end up taking more than one bay, make sure you pay appropriately. A cheap stop is only cheap if you avoid a parking fine.
What’s It Like Overnight?
Despite being close to the centre of town, we found it surprisingly quiet overnight. During the day there were plenty of cars coming and going, but by night the car park settled down and felt much calmer.
We had a peaceful night’s sleep with no noise or disturbances. There was still the usual sense of being in a town rather than out in the countryside, but nothing that made the stop feel uncomfortable.
We were not the only van there either. A couple of other campers had also parked up, which can be reassuring when you are using a simple stopover rather than a formal site. It gave the place a slightly more settled feel without it feeling busy.
Amenities, or Lack of Them
This is where expectations matter. Frankwell Main Car Park does not have toilets, water, showers or electric hook-up. It is best treated as a practical parking place, not a facility-led overnight stop.
That said, the location does help. During the day, public toilets are within about a five-minute walk in town, and there are takeaways, cafés, pubs and other useful services nearby. There is also a 24/7 launderette if you need one while travelling.
If you are arriving in a car for a day out, the lack of on-site facilities may not matter much because the town is so close. If you are in a van or campervan, you will want to be self-contained and comfortable with a basic overnight stop.
A Handy Base for Exploring Shrewsbury
One of the best things about parking at Frankwell is that you do not need to move the vehicle once you have arrived. Shrewsbury is very walkable from here, which makes the car park useful whether you are visiting for a few hours, spending the evening in town or using it as a simple overnight base.
We wandered through the medieval streets, looked around the independent shops, picked up food from a local chippy and stopped for a pint. The timber-framed buildings, riverside paths and Quarry Park are all easy to reach on foot from the car park.
The Severn Theatre is also nearby, which makes Frankwell a practical choice if you are visiting Shrewsbury for an evening event and want to avoid driving around the centre afterwards.
A Word of Caution: Flooding
One important thing to know before using Frankwell Main Car Park is its position by the River Severn. The car park is known to flood during periods of heavy rain or when river levels are high.
There are warning signs in place, and access can sometimes be restricted for safety reasons. This is worth taking seriously, especially if you are planning to leave a vehicle there overnight.
Before arriving, check the latest flood alerts through the UK Government’s Flood Information Service. If the river is high or there has been heavy rain, it may be better to find another place to park rather than risk getting caught out.
Final Thoughts
Frankwell Main Car Park is not a scenic park-up and it is not a campsite. It is a plain, practical car park in a very useful location. For us, that was exactly what made it work.
It was central, reasonably priced, quiet overnight and easy for walking into Shrewsbury. For general visitors, it makes a convenient base for exploring the town without having to keep moving the car. For van and campervan travellers, it can be a good self-contained stopover when you want somewhere simple and close to everything.
I would happily use it again, especially on a trip where the priority is easy access to Shrewsbury rather than countryside views or campsite facilities. Sometimes a good stop is simply one that does the job without making the day more complicated.
