Nature reserves are some of the most rewarding destinations to build a van trip around. Many of the best sites in the UK are in relatively remote locations – coastal marshes, upland moorland, ancient woodland – that happen to also be good overnight stop territory. Staying near a reserve overnight and walking in at dawn, before the car parks fill and the wildlife retreats, gives a completely different experience to a midday visit.
RSPB reserves across the UK are managed specifically for wildlife and often have car parks and footpaths that work well as overnight van bases. The great reserves – Minsmere in Suffolk, Titchwell Marsh in Norfolk, Leighton Moss in Lancashire, Loch Garten in the Cairngorms – are all within reach of overnight options. The RSPB app and website give opening times and access details for each site.
National Nature Reserves managed by Natural England, Natural Resources Wales and NatureScot cover a wide range of habitats, from blanket bog to ancient woodland to intertidal saltmarsh. Many have no facilities at all and require self-sufficient overnight stops in the surrounding area rather than at the site itself, but this is often the best kind of van overnight – a quiet layby close enough to walk to the reserve at first light.
Timing visits for dawn and dusk, the best times for most wildlife sightings, is one of the main advantages of being in a van nearby. You can cook dinner, sleep, and be at the reserve gate before any day visitor has left home. A pair of binoculars and a decent field guide are worth carrying as permanent van equipment for anyone with an interest in wildlife.
