Woodland

Woodland stops are some of the most restorative in UK van travel. Whether it’s a forestry car park at the edge of a managed plantation or a layby beside ancient oak woodland, stopping among trees offers a different kind of quiet to open moorland or coastal spots – enclosed, still, and often surprisingly private.

The UK has woodland in every corner, from the ancient temperate rainforest of the west coast of Scotland to the New Forest, Kielder, and the Forest of Dean. Each has its own character – the birch and pine of Highland forests feel nothing like the beech hangers of the South Downs or the sessile oak woods of mid Wales.

For vanlifers, woodland stops can be among the best for wildlife. Dusk and dawn bring movement – roe deer crossing firebreaks, tawny owls calling across the canopy, woodpeckers working the trunks above the van roof. The sounds and smells change with the season in a way that’s difficult to replicate anywhere else.

Posts in this tag cover woodland stops made during UK van trips – where we parked up, what the spot was like, and what made it worth stopping for.
